Appalachian State University has had a Wind Application Center here for about 10 years that focuses on the study of wind energy. The mission of the Arkansas Economic Development Commission is to lead statewide economic development, create targeted strategies which produce better paying jobs, promote communities, and support the training and growth of a 21st century skilled workforce. Through the AEDC, the Arkansas Energy Office promotes energy efficiency and emerging technologies through energy education and information programs as well as managing federal energy funds in the State of Arkansas. In October 2010, Clemson University broke ground at what will be a world class, state-of-the-art wind turbine drivetrain testing facility. The facility in North Charleston, S.C., will be capable of full-scale advanced testing of drivetrain systems, full nacelles, and simulation of blade forces on two test beds: 7.5 MW and 15 MW. www.clemsonenergy.com
The Center for Marine and Wetland Studies at Coastal Carolina University facilitates basic and applied research in coastal environments, processes and resource management. The Center has been an active partner with the overall South Carolina renewable energy team and been focused on marine observations, wind/wave and current modeling and assessments. The Georgia Wind Working Group promotes the responsible development and use of wind energy by facilitating stakeholder collaborations, assisting with resource assessments, and enhancing public understanding of the benefits and impacts of wind energy. Created in 1988, the North Carolina Solar Center, as part of the College of Engineering at North Carolina State University (NCSU), works closely with state and local government and the renewable energy industry. It manages and maintains the NCSU Solar House and serves as a resource for innovative, green energy technologies through research and demonstration, technical assistance, education, outreach and training.
