POWER SESSIONS

Responding to the past attendees' requests that some sessions at the conference were too specific or too technical, and that sessions with more general topics were needed, we created Power Sessions. Designed to touch on broader wind subjects such as: Project Development, Carbon Regulation and Climate Change, Wind Finance, Federal Policy, and Wind Integration, Power Sessions feature high level topics, presented by top industry leaders.

SCIENTIFIC TRACK
Again this year AWEA will have a couple of scientific sessions, featuring presentations that are each longer than those of the regular sessions, giving selected authors an opportunity to further explain the technical details of their papers. The authors will also be invited to submit their final papers to a scholarly journal for consideration for publication.

RECORDED CONFERENCE MATERIALS -- DOWNLOAD ELECTRONICALLY
WINDPOWER 2009 Conference sessions will be recorded and distributed electronically, approximately 2 weeks after the Conference. You can pre-order the materials as part of your registration at substantially reduced prices. After WINDPOWER, you will be emailed a link to download the recordings, to watch on your computer or iPod.

The Conference materials include presentations from the sessions (by speaker's permission) synched with speakers' voices so you can follow along. POSTER PRESENTATIONS

AWEA will once again feature over 150 educational poster presentations this year as a unique way for authors to convey their work, ideas and research.  The posters are prominently displayed in the convention center and are available to attendees for viewing throughout the conference.  A special Poster Reception will be held on Tuesday evening from 4:30 - 6:00 pm.

FIRST-TIME ATTENDEE ORIENTATION
Monday, May 4, 4:30 - 5:00 PM

A special session will be held for first-time attendees, prior to the WINDPOWER Kick-off Party and Concert on Monday, to provide an overview of the conference and the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA).  This session is an opportunity to meet AWEA staff, AWEA board members and conference committee members. Get insider perspectives from key members of the conference management team. Get hot tips from longtime conference goers and find out their top picks for must-attend events or sessions. Senior representatives from AWEA staff will discuss the role of AWEA, the committees within, and how AWEA events and activities help members. If you are a first timer, you don't want to miss this session so you can make the most of all the unique conference opportunities!

PRE-CONFERENCE SEMINARS

Monday, May 4, 9:00 - 4:00 PM
Separate Registration Required - 3 seminars to choose from!

Wind Energy 101:  Fundamentals of Wind Energy
(This seminar is designed for those who have 0-2 years of experience in wind)

Every year, AWEA offers this non-technical seminar, which will provide a comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of utility-scale wind energy. Anyone wanting to learn the basics of the wind energy industry will benefit from this day-long introductory seminar. Topics to be covered include an overview of the wind industry, wind energy economics, siting issues, wind resource analysis, technology, transmission and utility grid issues, and small wind.  This seminar is the perfect primer for the more detailed conference sessions that follow.

Wind Energy 201: What Makes the Development Process Successful

Moving a project from the pipeline to the finish line doesn't just happen - it is made to happen! Following the success of previous programs, this pre-conference seminar is back. While developing a virtual project over the course of the seminar, expert speakers will explore and reveal best practices that turn development assets into generating assets. The seminar will explain the most important aspects of successful wind project development through coverage of a wide range of topics, including wind resource, financing, permits, transmission issues, impact on the surrounding environment, asset management, and establishing strong relationships with communities, landowners, government agencies and utilities.

PAPER "LESS" SESSIONS
In a continued effort to be more environmentally friendly, AWEA will be going paperless for the session handouts. What does that mean? We will not be distributing the session handouts on-site at the conference in hard copy format. No more bulky packets or wasted paper from printing hundreds of copies for over 50 sessions. Instead, attendees will have access to electronic copies of all speaker bios, presentation materials, and handouts online before, during, and after the conference through the following 3 methods:

Before the meeting: Registered attendees will receive an email announcing when the conference materials are available. You may print them out in advance at your convenience or download them to your computer if you would prefer.

Onsite: A limited number of printing stations will be available where you can print the handouts you need, or download the presentations to your laptop so you can follow along in the conference sessions. Attendees will also receive a blank notepad so you will still be able to take notes during the sessions.

After the meeting: Handouts will be available to conference attendees online until June 30. That way you can continue to access them after you get back to your office.

More information will be provided soon at www.windpowerexpo.org/handouts.cfm but thank you in advance for your cooperation and support of this effort, designed to be one way that we're making WINDPOWER 2009 more environmentally-friendly than ever!
